Yvonne Reinwald

Yvonne Reinwald, PhD, is a senior lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom. She completed her PhD at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom before joining Keele University as a postdoctoral research associate. In recognition of her strengths and growing profile, she received the UK Robert Brown Tissue and Cell Engineering Society Early Career Award in 2016. Since joining NTU, she has expanded her research into the regeneration of tissue interfaces, the development of multicellular and multi-material tissue analogues, and the fabrication of biomedical implants using 3D printing. She now leads the Smart Materials Research Group and the Biomedical Engineering laboratories in the Department of Engineering. Dr. Reinwald has organized multiple conference symposia. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and supervised numerous graduate and postgraduate theses over the years.

This Edited Volume, Regenerative Biomaterials - Emerging Biomaterial Solutions to Aid Tissue Regeneration, is a collection of peer-reviewed chapters that offers a comprehensive overview of recent developments in tissue regeneration, including novel biomaterials derived from sustainable sources. The book comprises single chapters authored by various researchers and edited by an expert in tissue regeneration research. All chapters are complete in themselves but united under a common research study topic. This publication aims to provide an overview of recent research by international authors and to introduce new research directions for further development.

Pluripotent Stem Cells and Their Dynamic Niche

Cell-seeded implants are a regenerative medicine strategy that aims to replace injured tissue and restore tissue function. Pluripotent stem cells are promising cell candidates for the development of regenerative medicine therapies as they have the ability to self-renew and commit towards numerous cell types. In vivo, stem cells reside in a dynamic niche, a stem cell-specific microenvironment that possesses chemical, biological and mechanical cues, which drive the stem cell fate and renewal. The connection between stem cells and their niche is a two-way relationship consisting of both cell–cell interaction and cell–extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. An alternative regenerative medicine approach is the manipulation of the stem cell microenvironment. Hence, novel strategies have been developed including 3D biomaterials and bioreactor technologies providing topographical, chemical and mechanical cues to recreate the stem cell niche. Understanding the mechanisms controlling stem cell fate and the dynamic nature of the stem cell niche will enable researchers to replicate this stem cell-specific microenvironment, and therefore, harness and control the valuable attributes which stem cells possess. This chapter elucidates the importance of pluripotent stem cells and their dynamic niche in regenerative medicine. It further presents novel strategies to replicate chemical, topographical and mechanical stimuli which are essential for the regulation of stem cell fate and hence tissue regeneration.

Biomaterials in 3D Bioprinted Models of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A New Era for Precision Medicine

This chapter provides an in-depth examination of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and explores the potential of 3D bioprinting technologies in advancing TNBC research. It highlights how the combination of innovative biomaterials, coupled with 3D bioprinting, enables the creation of highly complex, physiologically relevant tumor microenvironments (TMEs), thereby enhancing our understanding of TNBC biology, improving the prediction of drug responses, and refining in vitro models for preclinical testing. The chapter reviews key innovations in biomaterials, focusing on natural bioactive hydrogels and tumor-mimicking extracellular matrices (ECMs), which play a critical role in developing models that more accurately reflect the heterogeneous nature of TNBC. It also covers advanced, multicellular bioprinting strategies that incorporate diverse cell types, including cancer, stromal, and immune cells, into structured, tumor-like constructs that mimic the spatial organization and interactions within the TME. These approaches significantly improve the predictive accuracy of TNBC models in drug screening, biomarker discovery, and treatment optimization, with the ultimate goal of facilitating the development of targeted therapies and personalized medicine. The chapter concludes by addressing current challenges, such as replicating the full complexity of tumors and scaling these models for broader use, while also highlighting promising future directions for enhancing the clinical relevance of TNBC in vitro models.
