Power generation using thermoelectric generator technology is becoming increasingly attractive solution due to the ongoing substantial improvements in material engineering, system optimization, and novel manufacturing technologies with recent advances in nanotechnology. The design and fabrication of novel thermoelectric materials is challenging because they require co-optimization of complex properties to efficiently convert thermal energy to electricity in what is known as the Seebeck effect. Computational chemistry and machine learning offer a solution toward finding optimal thermoelectric semiconductor alloys with higher figure of merit values. In this chapter, fundamental aspects and advances in thermoelectric materials for power generation are presented and discussed. A thorough modeling and numerical simulation for a case study of a TEG device application are also presented and discussed in this chapter.

Power generation using conventional and historically well-established renewable energy sources are well known for saving natural energy resources (e.g., fossil fuels), reducing GHG emissions and air pollution, as well as meeting future demands for prime electrical energy in various sectors and applications worldwide. For many years, solar photovoltaic (PV) has proven and continued to be successful and promising source of renewable energy for power generation. In this chapter, some fundamental aspects of power generation using solar PV systems are presented and discussed. Also, illustrative numerical examples based on fundamental energy conversion aspects and modeling are discussed with applications.

Wind energy is the process of converting the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical power using wind turbines, typically arranged into wind farms for large power generation. It is naturally replenishing and green energy resource, thus being a renewable energy resource, which has shown significant technological progress and spread worldwide as a successful source of renewable energy for producing electricity. It is becoming one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources and is a key component in the global transition to sustainable power generation. It has also been globally recognized as a critical technology for conserving natural resources, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, and fulfilling the rising global demand for primary electrical energy across diverse sectors. In this chapter, wind turbines were briefly introduced and described, with the main goal to present and discuss fundamental aspects of 1-D energy formulation using wind energy principles. It was found through detailed 1-D energy formulations that the maximum wind turbine conversion efficiency is approximately 59.3%, which confirms the Betz limit. Furthermore, this chapter discusses illustrative numerical examples that are grounded in the fundamentals of energy conversion and modeling, with practical applications provided.
